How Tantalum Plate is Manufactured — Production Process
Our tantalum plate is manufactured through hot rolling and cold rolling processes specifically designed for heavy-gauge material (typically 6mm to 50mm thickness). The production process ensures uniform microstructure, consistent mechanical properties, and defect-free internal quality throughout the full plate thickness.
Production begins with large vacuum arc melted ingots that are hot-forged into thick slabs at temperatures above 1200°C. The slabs undergo hot rolling at 900–1200°C to reduce thickness while maintaining a fine, uniform grain structure. Multiple hot rolling passes with controlled reductions ensure complete recrystallization and eliminate any residual cast structure.
For plates requiring tighter tolerances or thinner gauges, the hot-rolled plate undergoes cold rolling with intermediate vacuum annealing. Final processing includes stress-relief annealing, ultrasonic inspection for internal defects (per ASTM A578), dimensional verification, and chemical analysis. Each plate is certified to ASTM B708 standards.
Applications of Tantalum Plate
Tantalum plate products serve demanding applications across heavy industry and high-technology sectors:
Chemical Reactor Linings
Heavy-gauge tantalum plate is used to fabricate corrosion-resistant linings for chemical reactors, autoclaves, and pressure vessels. The plate is formed, welded, and attached to steel shells to create composite vessels that combine the strength of steel with the corrosion resistance of tantalum.
High-Temperature Structural Components
Tantalum plate is machined into structural components for vacuum furnaces, sintering equipment, and crystal growth systems operating at extreme temperatures. The material's strength and creep resistance at temperatures above 1500°C ensure structural integrity in the most demanding thermal environments.
Sputtering Target Blanks
Large-area tantalum plate is machined into sputtering targets for physical vapor deposition in semiconductor manufacturing. The plate's uniform grain structure and high purity ensure consistent thin-film deposition rates and uniform film properties across large wafer substrates.
Medical Implant Components
Tantalum plate is machined into large implant components including cranial plates, spinal fusion devices, and hip replacement components. The material's biocompatibility, radiopacity, and bone-integration properties make it valuable for reconstructive surgery applications.
Frequently Asked Questions about Tantalum Plate
Q: What is the difference between tantalum sheet and tantalum plate?
A: Sheet is typically ≤6mm thick while plate is >6mm thick. Both are manufactured per ASTM B708 but plate requires hot rolling while sheet is cold rolled.
Q: What thicknesses of tantalum plate are available?
A: We supply tantalum plate from 3mm to 50mm thick. Standard thicknesses include 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 40mm, and 50mm.
Q: Can tantalum plate be cut to custom sizes?
A: Yes, we offer waterjet cutting, plasma cutting, and sawing to deliver cut-to-size tantalum plate blanks with tight dimensional tolerances.
Q: What applications use thick tantalum plate?
A: Thick tantalum plate is used for chemical equipment flanges, vacuum furnace hearths, sputtering target backings, armor plating, and structural components requiring corrosion resistance.
